American river cruises are rapidly growing in popularity and the American Queen is making quite a name for herself. I’m excited to say that we’ve listened to your comments on where you’d like to sail and the types of theme cruises you want to see and we’ve rolled that together to create our new 2013 schedule of voyages. I’m also excited to tell you that we’re following the lead of the legendary steamboat company Greene Line Steamers who renamed their company Delta Queen Steamboat Company after their most famous boat, the immortal Delta Queen. As of July 1, the Great American Steamboat Company will become the American Queen Steamboat Company in honor of our wildly-popular lady, the American Queen.

I can think of no more fitting honor than to rename our company in tribute to the boat that has single-handedly re-launched authentic steamboat river voyages in America.

To go with our new name, we will have some wonderful new itineraries in 2013. Voyages go on sale tomorrow, June 22, 2012, and I urge you to book your voyage soon so that you’re assured of your first choice in staterooms and itineraries.

The grand American Queen will offer fabled river voyages on the Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee Rivers for the 2013 season with convenient departures from some of the United States’ most storied cities such as Memphis, New Orleans, St. Louis, St. Paul, Cincinnati, Chattanooga, and Pittsburgh.

What are the highlights of 2013?

First, we have total of 30 departures from Memphis and New Orleans, showcasing the Lower Mississippi’s fabled plantations, civil war battlefields, history and Southern culture

Second, we have more accommodations for single travelers including the introduction of our new Single Outside Staterooms in addition to our existing Single Inside Cabins.

Third, we’re introducing a new pricing structure called Red, White and Blue Pricing that offers even greater value for travelers with fares beginning as low as $1,095 per guest.

Lastly, we are introducing a number of new and expanded theme cruises. We will have five special departure featuring Natchez’s Spring Pilgrimage Pageant, a Elvis Tribute cruise we’re calling “Blue Hawaii,” and all new theme cruises such as Blues & Barbeque, Louisiana History & Culture, Mystical Krewe of Steamboating Mardi Gras™, Dixie Fest, Southern Spirits, Gardens of the River, In the Good Old Summertime™, Baseball Legends, Manifest Destiny, and The Great Steamboat Era. We will also have our first annual Delta Queen Steamboat Company and Paddlewheel Steamboat Society Of America™ Reunion voyages. The Civil War will still be featured prominently with an Epic Civil War voyage between Memphis and Chattanooga.

Why am I so excited? Simply because the American Queen employs an affable, all-American crew that is eager to please. Let’s face it; few things are nicer than mint juleps on deck on a glorious summer afternoon on the Ohio River or morning coffee in the grand J.M. White Dining Room as you steam into St. Paul. With a homeport of Memphis, the American Queen carries with her the same devotion to exceptional dining and entertainment, including Dixieland Jazz and gracious southern charm and hospitality. Inspired by the greatest steamboats of the 19th Century, the American Queen offers an opulent two-level Grand Saloon, an elegant two-deck high Dining Room, staterooms and suites appointed with period furnishings and antique touches, many with their own private veranda and all with the modern amenities that today’s travelers expect. Most notably, the American Queen carries only 436 guests, surrounding them in an atmosphere befitting a fine antebellum mansion complete with rich paneling, priceless antiques, Tiffany glass and public rooms that are warm and welcoming.

And we’re finally reflecting all the American Queen brings to American river cruising by renaming the company. We are embracing the legacy of the American Queen and renaming the company in her honor. Because of her iconic status, she has quickly become the brand in the eyes of our guests and travel agent partners.

We still have space on our 2012 voyages but if you’re unable to find the time, I hope you’ll be able to sail with us next year. And to all our 2012 guests, let me say how pleased we will be to welcome you back aboard in 2013. Your loyalty and praise means the world to our staff and crew on the American Queen and among the team here in our Memphis headquarters.
