Avalon Waterways has announced that respected Jewish author and lecturer Inge Auerbacher will join their annual Jewish Heritage Cruise this October to share her account of life as a child in Germany during WWII.

Ms Auerbacher was the last Jewish child born in the German village of Kippenheim in 1934, with four years later she experienced the infamous Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, a pogrom, a series of coordinated attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and parts of Austria in November 1938, with the attacks leaving the streets covered with broken glass from the windows of Jewish owned stores, buildings, and synagogues, with at least 91 Jews killed in the attacks, and 30,000 arrested and incarcerated in concentration camps, with Ms Auerbacher imprisoned for several years in a Czechoslovakia concentration camp.

Miraculously, Ms Auerbacher and her parents survived and moved in 1946 to the United States where she studied to become a chemist and authored six books on her experience.

Now retired, Ms Auerbacher travels the world to speak about the Holocaust, tolerance, and human rights and as a guest lecturer on the 13 day Jewish themed cruise, she will share her story as travellers discover European monuments, museums, and traditions significant to Jewish history.

Cruising the Danube from Budapest to Prague, the itinerary includes visits to Europe’s largest synagogue, Prague's Josefov, the Jewish Quarter, the remains of ancient synagogues beneath Neupfarrplatz in Regensberg, Nuremberg city sightseeing, an optional excursion to the Salzburg synagogue and the WWII Jewish ghetto of Terezin.
