Los Angeles (February 9, 2012) – Since its inception, Viking River Cruises has sought to offer guests the opportunity to discover unforgettable destinations across Europe, Asia and Egypt in unrivaled style, making it the world’s leading river cruise line. Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, the company today announced it will enter a new European territory in 2013 with an all-new itinerary in Portugal and Spain, allowing travelers to experience “The River of Gold” like never before.

During this 10-day cruise-and-land journey along the pristine and unhurried Douro River, guests will explore the unique cultural, historical and aesthetic offerings of Portugal and Spain. Whether it’s taking in the sights at a magnificent monastery in Lisbon, sampling port from traditional wooden casks, touring a baroque mansion in Régua, strolling through the medieval city of Salamanca, or just taking in unspoiled vistas, guests will experience the heart of an unforgettable region.

“We always love creating new cruise programs, and we are especially proud to launch our first offering on the Douro River, where we can help immerse our guests in the rich cultures of Spain and Portugal,” said Torstein Hagen, Founder and Chairman of Viking River Cruises. “The cities along the Douro offer a true diversity of experiences, from serene villages to bustling cities, and from baroque palaces to historic castles. We know travelers will be eager to discover these captivating destinations in the intimate way that only Viking can provide.”

The Portugal’s River of Gold cruise begins with a land tour of Lisbon, Portugal’s capital and one of the world’s oldest cities. Lisbon offers shopping and entertainment in the Bairro Alto district and two marvelous historical sites, Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, which together comprise a UNESCO World Heritage Site. En route from Lisbon, stop in Coimbra; the river cruise begins in Porto, home to expansive vineyards, and pauses in Bitetos and then Régua for an excursion to Lamego’s beautiful Sanctuary of Our Lady. The next stop is Pinhão, where guests will enjoy a Portuguese folk music show, and then Barca d’Alva, where the luscious wines of Quinta do Seixo await. After a full-day excursion in Salamanca, a city which is itself a living museum, the cruise docks at Vega de Terrón for a tour of the small village of Castelo Rodrigo, and then returns to Régua before the final stop in Porto.

Guests on the Portugal’s River of Gold cruise will travel in the sleek and stylish Viking Douro, one of the newest and most innovative ships sailing the Douro River. A floating hotel, the ship features elegant interiors, spacious staterooms with French balconies and a panoramic sun deck with a pool and Jacuzzi.
