High Country Road Trip Discussion

I figured I should start a topic for this part of the upcoming adventure. I almost forget that we still have over a month to go after Iceland before we get home!

Safe travels as you hit the road. I would've never made it because I would've stroked out if all those Hertz travails had happened to me. Unbelievable. (Who knew there were such things as chilled seats?!)

Looking forward to the photos...especially Mesa Verde. I was there 40+ years ago when you could walk around and climb into several of the sights directly; am curious to see how it is now. It was very memorable!

Thanks! That Hertz stuff was unbelievable, especially how I was initially treated by the "specialists" at corporate. Both of them just assumed it was all my fault and were very rude. I'd hate to see how they would act if it was something really drastic like a wrecked car or something. Anyway, it all turned out fine, but I think from now on I'll pay the extra few hundred bucks and rent from the big airport locations. That experience was about as perfect as it could be.

Enjoying the photos, and thanks for the tip on the app. I'd never heard of it, but see they have one for Maui ($9.99 for the entire island), so maybe I will buy it.

I'll take a stab at your pet peeve -- light fixtures too low?

BTW, Crystal just completely destroyed my plans for Akureyri by expanding the morning tour to Godafoss to a 4.5 hour "Chairman's and President's tour," which now includes another stop and also lunch and more time with said persons. I had planned to see the falls and then hit that restaurant you mentioned. To their credit, they've added on this stuff at no extra cost, but I have zero interest in the meet and greet nor the extra stuff! I'm thinking of just skipping the falls and wandering in the town only (shopping, botanical garden, etc) and then lunch. Is Godafoss a must see, especially since I'm going to Gulfoss?

The peeve does involve the light fixtures, but not the height ;)

We've VERY happy with the app. We used it again today for Canyonlands. The commentary is lighthearted and informative. It is amazing how accurately it is timed to the drive. Well, it is if you don't speed. A couple of times the last word was cut off by the start of the next clip because we were going over the speed limit in the park, but it isn't a problem. Especially liked that we could use the car's Bluetooth to link the phone and hear the audio that way. I especially like that it tells you how long you have to walk and the time it takes round trip from the parking lot to see certain things. Although, it did lie about one path today being flat, which it most certainly was not, the 15 minute time was right.

Hm, I don't know if I'd call Godafoss a must see, but I'd see it if there is a convenient way to do it. After all, it is just a big waterfall, so skipping it won't be the end of the world. Walking the town, garden, etc. won't take long. There is only one shopping street and it is just a few blocks long. All of the shops are at one end (where you'd start if you walk to town from the pier). The garden is a bit of a walk uphill, but not unreasonable. So, what you are proposing is definitely doable in an afternoon. The restaurant I talked about faces the water, so it is on the other side of the shops that face the main street. It had a red carpet on the sidewalk when we were there. Anyway, you can play it by ear and see how much time you have. As I recall, there are tour operators in town, so if you end up with lots of time you could check with them about going to the falls.

That Mexican restaurant menu in Aspen shows absurdly expensive prices. I was in Colorado on business last year at this time and drove to Vail on a Saturday, just for something to do over the weekend. Vail had great restaurants with off season prices. I guess there's either no such thing as off season prices in Aspen or off season prices in Aspen are in season prices for Vail.

That's definitely the most expensive Mexican food we've ever had. It was good, but nothing extraordinary. There is a very short off season in Aspen, but I don't think restaurant prices change any. Hotels are cheaper in the off season though. I can't figure out how all of these extremely expensive restaurants can survive. They are literally on top of one another. The local woman I spoke to yesterday said that there used to be an off season, but now the summer is just as busy as the winter ski season, so it is only slow for maybe two or three months.

Here's a link to a site that has menus for Aspen's restaurants: http://www.eataspen.com
